I still remember the first time I moved out of my parents’ house and entered my “independence phase.” It feels like a lifetime ago, yet the memories of my first rented apartment with my friends remain so vivid. My room was a small bedroom with just a few pieces of furniture, but I quickly made it my own. I decorated it with love and endless hopes for the future :). Back then, my budget was quite limited, so everything was affordable. But still incredibly cute. 💗
Moving forward through life, I suppose my bedroom grew bigger and bigger. But to tell you the truth, I still prefer the cosiness of a tiny space. There are so many emotions it has instilled in me. I felt safe and protected from the outside world. Within those four walls, my thoughts were heard and never judged. I felt free. 😊
Now… maybe it’s linked to my anxiety 😅, but I just don’t feel the same in a large, spacious bedroom. I hope it’s not just me. 👀 But a small bedroom naturally creates a snug and intimate atmosphere. And psychologically this gives us comfort and emotional warmth. I often compare my bedroom to an enormous and never-ending hug. 🙂 Besides, it’s amazingly easy to style. We just need a bit of love and a tiny hint of creativity.

Choose a bed with hidden storage

I simply love this type of bed. Their design is so beautiful, yet they still provide such great benefits. We can opt for an ottoman bed, in whichever colour is dearest to our heart. Beneath the mattress, we have an enormous storage space. We can keep seasonal clothes or all our bedding items there. I, for one, prefer to switch my clothes from one season to another and not “bother” my bed too much. 🤭 After all, it is one of my best friends. 🙂
We also have the option of a bed with side drawers, which might be a bit easier to handle. However, I feel that the ottoman option provides more space. It all depends on our personal taste and adjustment needs. Whichever we choose, it is such a space-saver in our small bedroom decor. These types of beds are amazingly practical and also help us achieve a tidy and organised room.
Opt for a sleek wardrobe design with integrated mirrors

In a small space, the presence of mirrors is a game-changer. They instantly light up the space and add a touch of elegance to our room. With careful placement, our small bedroom would appear twice as large. For our small bedroom decor, we need to stick to multipurpose furniture pieces. It is the best approach to maintain a clean aesthetic in our space while utilising all the necessary functional items. So we can easily opt for a sleek wardrobe design with mirror sliding doors.
I have always loved having a stylish wardrobe in my bedroom. While most of us nowadays prefer the idea of a separate dressing room, I am a bit old-fashioned. 😅 I feel that my bedroom is incomplete without a wardrobe to keep my favourite clothes close by. Especially as I am something of a fashion enthusiast. Not to mention how much of a mirror lover I am (I love to see myself trying on outfits from every angle 🤭). In my book, a wardrobe with integrated mirrors is an absolute yes. What about you?
Make the best use of vertical space

In our case, the importance of our bedroom walls falls into the highest category. They do not simply define the cosiness of our room; in a small bedroom, they offer unlimited storage space that we must maximise. This is what I call the beauty of vertical shelving. Wherever we have a free wall (whether above our bed or in front of it) we can simply add floating shelves. This way, we can decorate with our favourite pieces while also keeping the things we need on a daily basis within easy reach. For me, this would definitely be my books. 🙂
This kind of design is also very intimate and personal. All the things that define us as individuals are displayed on those little shelves. You know… it is said that a person can be easily characterised by the items they choose to keep close. 👀 So… maybe if we don’t want to reveal too much about who we are, we should just keep our bedroom off-limits. Or not. 🤭
The magic of lighting in a small bedroom

Well… I’ll start by saying that no artificial lighting will ever be as sublime as natural light. So, the best tip I can give you is to make the most of our windows whenever possible. Natural light will make our small bedroom shine and create the illusion of a more open and airy space. Basically, every corner of the room will disappear.
That being said, of course, we have to take advantage of artificial lighting as well. It is a powerful tool that can change the ambience in the blink of an eye. If we want our small bedroom to appear wider and extremely welcoming, we should focus on different illumination fixtures. When various light particles blend into one another, they create a spectacle of warmth and depth. ✨
I would suggest warm ceiling lighting throughout the room, as it will make our decor feel more joyful and spacious. We can also choose two beautiful bedside lamps to create an intimate atmosphere when we’re cuddled up in bed. One other thing I would recommend is opting for a warm white tone, as it is not harsh and gently eases your eyes into a relaxed state. 🧘♀️
Furthermore, I love adding strip LED lighting above my shelves or around my bed. It makes me feel like I’m in a heavenly cocoon where nothing can ever hurt me. It truly brings me happiness. ❤️
Keep the decor minimal and the space uncluttered

This is quite an easy one, actually. The less we crowd the room, the more open and inviting it feels. Over the years of decorating my home, I’ve found that too much furniture or decoration can make the room feel cramped and chaotic. Now… I’ve had enough of that in my daily contact with the outside world. I certainly don’t want it in my private space, right? By sticking to only the essentials and choosing simple, clean pieces, we allow our small bedroom to breathe. We allow ourselves to breathe. 💆♀️
Storage is another key factor. When we find clever ways to hide clutter, like using under-bed storage or hidden shelves, the room immediately feels more spacious. Ultimately, our purpose is to transform our bedroom into a peaceful getaway. It’s not just a place to sleep. Quite the opposite… for me, it’s one of the few places where I can actually “wake up” and remember who I truly am. Nowadays, it’s far too easy to get confused. 🤔
Use a light colour palette

A light colour palette in our small bedroom is truly a game-changer. Over the years, I’ve found that light colours can make a space feel bigger, brighter, and more inviting. If we choose soft hues like pale greys, whites, or pastel shades, our room will naturally feel more open and airy. It’s as if the walls are gently receding, giving the optical illusion of a larger area. 🤍
Plus, a light colour palette can be combined with any style we want to implement in our design. But I can guarantee that these shades will provide the most soothing backdrop for our unwinding moments, when everything feels at peace. 🧘♀️ Another thing that I really love about light colours is that they reflect natural light. This can make such a huge difference in our small bedroom, especially if we’re not lucky enough to have large windows. If I close my eyes, I can picture how the soft tones bounce the light so gracefully and tranquilly around the room. A cute little peaceful oasis, away from all the hustle and bustle. 😌
Make it your own

If we are the kind of people who feel that a minimal design is a bit too impersonal and inexpressive, then we need to make the space our own. We have to claim it by leaving our mark all over the place. We can express ourselves through small decorative pieces or even through the paint we choose for our walls. Basically, we create our whole identity through this stylish small bedroom. No pressure there! 😅
So, what can we do to make the space feel, smell, and reflect who we are? We can start by adding our favourite flowers nearby. Or lighting up our most adored scented candles on our bedside table. I, for one, love to be surrounded by photos. Those little mementos that capture feelings, not just people or moments. But we are free to decorate with what resonates with us. There is no rule, no textbook, and definitely no judgement. 🙂
To be honest, I do take into consideration a lot of interior design tips and tricks. But when it comes to personalising my home, it’s just another level. One that cannot be taught. It’s an emotional phase of the decorating process. That is what makes us so unique as individuals. We perceive things differently, and our emotional triggers are so distinctive. That is the real beauty.
Make the most of it! 😊
