How to make our bedroom extra cosy this winter

I can already smell winter in the crisp, cold air. It immediately fills me with joy and overwhelming emotion. 💓 It reminds me of the happiness I used to feel as a little girl when I knew it was almost time for Christmas. For me, Christmas starts in mid-November and finishes in early January. 🎅 I don’t know how it is for everyone else, so I can only speak from my own perspective. 😌 One thing I’ve loved to do since childhood is to prepare my cosy bedroom and welcome winter in the proper way.

Am I the only person who loves to wear knitwear, chic gloves, and fluffy scarves? It just makes me feel so stylish and timeless. 💁‍♀️✨ But if there’s something I love more than wearing amazing outfits during the cold season … it’s coming home to find my cosy bedroom styled in the same way. Let’s just say, my bedroom and I are one and the same. My room needs to cosy up as well during winter. Otherwise, it will lose all the charm of this wonderful season. Right? 😅

Well… I have a few things that are undisputable when it comes to this process. Ready or not, here they come! 😀

Cosy up the floor

If we think about it for a second, the first thing that connects us with our bedroom is the floor. The minute we walk through that door, we should feel as if we’ve stepped into our own little haven. 🧸. For me, it’s the one place in my home where I don’t want to wear slippers. I just want to step onto something fluffy and instantly relax. There’s no better remedy to boost my positive energy during winter. You know, with the lack of vitamin D ☀️ and everything, we still need to make our brains happy! 🙃

So, a thick and warm neutral rug could be the perfect choice for that extra touch of cosiness. I usually prefer a rug that leaves a bit of space uncovered, as I love the appearance of parquet as well. This combination of parquet and plush texture gives me the sensation of that dreamy cabin in the woods. The ideal setting for those romantic winter nights! ❄️❤️ I’m already dreaming 😌✨.

If we already have a rug, we can double down on comfort by layering a smaller faux fur or sheepskin rug on top. This will add an extra layer of softness, especially around our seating areas or next to our bed. To be honest, I love adding a few more wherever I think it looks cute. 😊

Layer Up for Warmth

If I’m being totally honest, I adore layering up in all seasons. What I change when the cold comes is the textures of the elements. As you can imagine, during winter, I go for all things fluffy. It’s extremely important to me that my bedroom is aesthetically pleasing, but even more important is choosing materials that make me feel comfortable and indulged.

So, let’s start with our duvet throw. I’d suggest choosing a high-quality, cosy option to set the tone for the rest of the room. As I mentioned before, I would opt for neutral colours during cold weather. They give our bedroom warmth and familiarity 😍 exactly what we need. The essential piece would be a chunky knit blanket, the kind we can snuggle up with or take a quick (but heavenly 💗) nap under.

Then we continue our layering-up process. Honestly, we can choose whatever we like to add, an extra soft faux fur throw or a cosy fleece blanket. Whatever we love most, but we just need to make sure that the throws are increasingly smaller as we layer up. I would recommend no more than three layers. After all, we want to achieve a comfortable and snug bedroom, not the look of washing day on top of our bed. 🧺 (P.S., is anyone else dreading washing day? 😅)

Invest in seasonal bedding

As winter settles in, there’s nothing quite like swapping our light sheets for cosy options such as flannel and brushed cotton. These materials are specifically designed to feel warm to the touch, making them ideal for all the cold nights ahead of us. ❄️🌙 I like to think of my bed as an insulated, dreamy corner that offers me the warmth I need during those frosty evenings. How wonderful does that sound?

Brushed cotton bedding is one of my all-time favourites, though I tend to use it more in the autumn season. By mid-November, I already feel the urge to buy those extra-thick, extra-fluffy bedding sets. I’m not sure if you’ve ever tried a teddy fleece duvet cover 🐻, but if you have, you know exactly what I mean. Being embraced by this amazing plush material is a feeling I can hardly describe—indescribable, really.😌🤍

Besides the fluffiest bedding, we also need our bed filled with soft and comfortable cushions 🛏️💫. Without them, it can feel empty and impersonal, almost like a hotel room. At least, that’s how it feels to me! I love having lots of cute cushions scattered around, adding warmth and personality to my space. We can even go for some with unique, seasonal messages to keep our spirits up through the cold, shorter days ❄️🌨️. These little touches make our bed more than just a place to sleep. They make it a cosy retreat we can’t wait to snuggle into every evening. 🥰🌙

Warm Up with Soft Lighting

Lighting is one of the key factors to achieving the cosy aesthetic we are dreaming of ✨. Harsh light is the total opposite of the ambiance we are trying to create. We need warm, dimmable lights that gently soften our room. Their whole purpose is to help us relax and enjoy the magic of the season. I, personally, use my bedside lamps a lot during winter️. They create the level of lighting I’m craving, not too strong, but not too weak either. Perfect for our cosy bedroom theme!

But when I want an even more intimate atmosphere, I light my lovely candles 🕯️. Nowadays, I prefer to use battery-operated ones, as they feel a bit safer. Plus, I don’t need to worry about them, as they come with a timer. I usually use them when I go to sleep 😴. Their flickering light works better than a melatonin pill (just kidding, never tried one 😄).

Another amazing addition I have is the wonderful fairy lights ✨. Their subtle, twinkling glow brings all the bedroom decor together, creating a space that feels like a fairytale come true. Besides, what says ‘winter wonderland’ better than the presence of fairy lights? I promise, I am still that little girl from years ago. 😊

Create a Cosy Reading Corner

If we have a little space to spare, we should not think twice. We can create a dreamy reading nook and indulge ourselves with a good book or a captivating movie. Don’t get me wrong, I adore my big screen TV and the movie nights with my boyfriend. They are simply irreplaceable for us 🍿❤️. But when it’s cold outside and the windows are literally freezing ❄️, I simply love the idea of cosying up in a small corner of my own. It makes me feel safe and cuddled 🤗. This is actually where I (re)watch all my Christmas movies, on my cute laptop. And it’s one of my favourite moments throughout the whole year.

Now that we have established why we need this rest corner 😁, let’s see what we need to make it happen. A comfy chair is essential, one where we can sink into and decompress. We can choose an armchair or a chic hanging one. The main idea is for us to be as comfortable as possible. We can drape a warm, soft blanket over it and add a fluffy small cushion for extra comfort.

To improve the atmosphere, we can include a small lamp with soft, warm lighting. It’s all about creating a gentle glow that makes our space feel calm and inviting ✨. We can even add a basket to keep our favourite books within arm’s reach. So, we’re always ready to dive into a new story. This is actually one of the areas where I like to have a faux fur rug (it feels incomplete without it 😅). In the end, it becomes more than just a place to read or watch our movies. It’s a space where we can truly unwind and enjoy those peaceful moments away from the world 🧘‍♀️.

Bring in Soothing Scents

Bringing in soothing scents can transform our bedroom, especially during the cold weather. Winter calls for comforting, warm fragrances to put us into that state of pure joy. I prefer to use wax melts or scented candles. Their fragrance is amazingly intense, and they last a long time. What scents can we possibly want? I’m thinking cinnamon, creamy vanilla, or even coffee. It may sound crazy, but I associate the smell of coffee with cold mornings and my hot cup in hand. Maybe it’s just me. 😁

Which one is your scent? For me, these wintery fragrances bring so many emotional memories. The warmth of cinnamon reminds me of cosy moments by the fire, while vanilla reminds me of my mum and her soft hug ❤️. And coffee? It’s the perfect reminder of those quiet, chilly mornings, wrapped in a blanket, ready to take on the day with a hot drink in hand.

Scents can truly evoke memories and emotions, and they play a huge part in creating a space that feels just right. It’s amazing how something as simple as a fragrance could make our bedroom feel like a beautiful winter retreat.

P.S. Can you tell that I love winter? 😄😊
