Sometimes in our lives, we all have those moments when we want to start fresh, anew. I have to admit that for me, making changes to my home decor is an amazing therapy. It doesn’t really matter the size of the changes. What’s really important is the feeling I get from doing so. The rush through my veins. 🩸 It feels like I am leaving things unworthy of me behind. The first room to have this “honour” is the living room. It just makes sense to start with the epicentre of the house. Right? 🙂
The funny thing is, whenever I start to redecorate, the colour green pops into my head. I either want to paint a wall green or buy some cute furniture in this shade. I never understood why this hue was always among my first options. Well, after a bit of research, I now have the answer.
This beautiful colour in our home design promotes feelings of positivism and joy. 🙃 Plus, it’s often associated with new life and fresh beginnings. I guess my instinct just knew all of this before my actual consciousness. Actually, it comes as no surprise. Green is the canvas of spring, a season of awakening. Let’s see what a green living room decor can awaken in us as well. 😊

- 1. Choose the Right Shade of Green

First of all, we need to pick the ideal shade of green. Deep greens vary from forest and emerald to olive and moss. It’s crucial that we choose a hue that suits our room.
Therefore, we need to take into account its size and the level of natural light it receives. If we have smaller spaces or limited light, we should opt for a green with warmer undertones. I am thinking of rich olive or moss. 🫒 This will introduce warmth and prevent our living room from feeling overly dim.
Conversely, if we have more space with abundant natural light, we need a more striking, cooler shade. Emerald or forest green can work splendidly. These hues will create a dramatic yet welcoming ambience.
The finish of the paint also plays a role in our setting. A matte finish will provide depth and sophistication. On the other hand, a satin finish will reflect light in the most beautiful way. Personally, I am a fan of matte paint. What about you? 😊
- 2. Incorporate Green Through Paint and Wallpaper

Once we’ve picked out our perfect shade of green, the fun begins. We can now think about how to introduce it into our living room. For example, we could choose to paint all four walls in a rich green. This approach will definitely create a snug and cosy atmosphere. We will just be waiting all the time we are away to get home and indulge in the safety of our own corner. 🫶
For a subtler effect, however, we might choose to paint just one feature wall. Painting one feature wall in a deep green shade can dramatically alter the feel of our room. It is a simple way to add a bold splash of colour. Not to mention how budget-friendly and easy to achieve is.
Or we might use green wallpaper with a delicate pattern. Perhaps a floral one! 🙃 You know… to blur a bit the boundary between indoors and outdoors. 🙂 This method will allow us to play with various design elements while keeping things fresh and lively.
- 3. Integrate Green Textiles

Textiles are a fun and easy way to weave green into our living room. Cushions provide a fantastic opportunity to experiment with different shades and patterns. By doing so, we can bring this rich colour into our home in a flexible manner. I just love to play with different tones and themes. Plus, it is such an affordable option that we can change them whenever we desire. It’s not a commitment for life. 😅 For instance, a velvet deep green cushion will make our setting a bit more dramatic. Meanwhile a leafy patterned throw can enliven the atmosphere and bring joy. Don’t be afraid to mix them either. After all, we have mixed emotions all the time. 🤭
In addition, we could consider inserting a solid green rug. This would serve as a striking anchor for the area. We have many choices to think about! It could be a rug in a bold hue or a patterned one with hints of green. Whichever we choose, it will help to unify the entire decor. Besides, we all love that sense of lovely warmth underfoot. These simple details are what truly makes a house a home. 😊
My favourite enhancement is layering through cosy throws. I simply adore soft and fluffy materials. They feel like a cuddly hug from someone you love. 🫶 We can adorn our space with chunky knit blankets that accentuate the beauty of green. Feel free to look for different textiles! Pick whatever is more suitable for your skin. I truly support the idea that decorating our home should be like a long session of self-pampering. 😌
- 4. Add Depth with Green Furniture and Upholstery

If we are ready to make a bold statement, green furniture or upholstery is the way to go. 🙃 Imagine a vivid green velvet sofa as the centrepiece of our living room! It would be an undeniably luxurious touch. This opulent and lush shade has the capacity to enhance any decor. I might dare to say we wouldn’t need any other green item. This is how powerful it can be to have a statement piece of colourful furniture in our setting. We can simply pair it with neutral cushions or a neutral throw. The idea is to prevent the colour from feeling too heavy. At the same time, it will add layers of visual interest.
If we’re not quite ready to commit to a green sofa, we might consider incorporating smaller pieces into our room. We could turn our focus to a green armchair or a green ottoman. I adore having this kind of furniture. It just makes the area feel a lot cosier. Plus, it gives us more seating options for our family and friends. 🫶
Alternatively, if we already own a vintage armchair, we can consider reupholstering it. We might choose a sumptuous deep green fabric and turn it into a stunning focal point. Of course, this is for those of us who love spending our time being creative. 🙂 This approach will definitely allow us to blend timeless charm with a modern twist. It will create a unique and eye-catching piece that stands out in our home.
- 5. Play with Lighting to Amplify Green Tones

Lighting is undoubtedly vital in shaping any room’s character. To make the most of deep green tones, we should lean towards gentle, warm illumination. This kind of lighting brings a comforting glow. It prevents spaces from appearing overly sombre. We can select floor lamps with shades crafted from natural linen. Or we might opt for a crystal chandelier to hover above our seating area.
There’s no need to be shy with lighting. Layering different types of illumination (ambient, task, and accent) will help us maintain a balance of cosiness and practicality. We might even look for some stylish table lamps made from green-tinted glass. This will subtly accentuate our decorative books or ornaments. 🫶
To further soften the ambience, we could introduce fairy lights or candles. We can arrange candles within a glass holder. Or we can weave fairy lights around a cluster of houseplants for that magical, ethereal effect. 🧚
- 6. Balance with Neutral Tones and Natural Textures

To temper the intensity of deep green, we should include natural materials like wood, rattan, or jute. A wooden coffee table or rattan chair can introduce a warm contrast. Besides, deep green harmonises effortlessly with shades such as cream, beige, grey, and soft white. By blending the depth of green with these calming hues, we can create a more balanced aesthetic. ⚖️
For example, we can pair a deep green wall with cream or beige sofas. And we could complement the look with wooden flooring or a natural jute rug. We can even dress our windows in linen curtains to bring the grace of natural textiles. They will amplify the deep green and provide a more grounded feel. 😌
Rustic textures, such as woven baskets, also add depth to our space. These materials are often quite affordable, turning our living room into a tranquil retreat. As we can see, achieving a deep green living room on a budget is entirely feasible. We just require a dash of creativity and ingenuity. 🙂
- 7. Accessorise with Green Decor Elements

Nothing screams “green living room” quite like the presence of real greenery. Houseplants will reinforce our green theme and purify the air we are breathing. We could choose from a variety of plants, including towering ones like the fiddle leaf fig or rubber plant.
Alternatively, we might select smaller, low-maintenance succulents and trailing species such as pothos or string of hearts. We can experiment with different plant heights, pot sizes, and materials. Terracotta pots, ceramic planters, and woven baskets can introduce additional textures to the room. These elements enrich the natural, laid-back atmosphere. 💆
On the other hand, decorative items like green vases, candles, or even book covers can infuse extra pops of green into our living room. We might consider integrating deep green ceramics or textured ornaments for a dynamic and layered look. The beauty of these accessories is their flexibility. We can easily swap them out seasonally or whenever we fancy a change. Who doesn’t want a change once in a while, right? 😅 🙃
- 8. Mix and Match Artwork and Metallic Accents

A captivating green abstract painting can significantly contribute to a unified and chic decor theme. Artworks with metallic touches are ideal for adding layers to a room’s colour palette without making irreversible changes. Green-themed art, such as botanical prints or abstract works in varying shades of green, can inject our personal flair. If we don’t integrate our personal style, we might end up with a design that feels colder and more impersonal. Exactly the opposite of what we desire.
Moreover, we can add metallic highlights to other decorative items. We can combine shades of gold, brass, and copper with rich green to create a beautiful contrast. I am thinking of gold-framed mirrors, brass side tables, or even green cushions adorned with gold accents. We should remember not to go overboard. Just a few carefully selected metallic pieces can provide the perfect amount of opulence and shimmer. Everybody needs a glimmer of sparkle in their life. 🙃
